Our programmes and resources for this year's WOMAN'S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER on 3rd March
were prepared by Christian woman from Indonesia - a country which has been subjected to tension riots, fighting, economic collapse and discrimination against Christians over the past years. WDP material has been compiled before the recent East Timor elections. We therefore need to update ourselves on the contemporary situation in Indonesia when we share in intercession on "Talitha, Kumi !
" - Young Woman, Stand Up !
People are so excited about the new millennium. Lively discussions about the best entertainment to attend are heard daily. The fact is though, that the millennium commemorates only one thing, the birth of Jesus Christ 2000 years ago - the only Saviour born for only one purpose, to save people from their sins !
God knows our pains, fears and feelings of uncertainty. Our Father has provided a Way, and only through Him can we experience true meaning in the new millennium.
"Talitha, Kumi !" - "Be not afraid, only believe, for I, the Lord your God, am with you wherever you go!"
THE WOMAN'S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
is a worldwide ecumenical movement of Christian woman in more than 170 countries, who come together to observe a common day of prayer on the first Friday in March every year.
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
brings together women of various races, cultures and churches in fellowship and understanding.
Through WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
, women around the world
- affirm their faith in Jesus Christ;
- are enriched by the faith experience of Christians of other countries and cultures;
- take up the burdens of other people, and pray with them and for them.
The Woman's World Day of Prayer started in 1887 . Concerned for the needs of immigrants and the aftermath of slavery in their country, women of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America sent out a call for a national day of prayer. Women of other denominations joined in and the movement rapidly spread to other countries. Where women learned of this Day of Prayer, they carried the idea to their countries and soon the Day became known as the WOMAN'S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
In SOUTH AFRICA
the first World Day of Prayer service was held in March 1930 in the Sea Point Congregational Church. In 1946 a NATIONAL COMMITTEE for Southern Africa was established. Members of this Committee are nominated by a variety of church leadership.
are donated interdenominationally in support of projects of the Bible Society of SA, Radio Pulpit and World Vision.
Representatives of National Committees meet every four years at an INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE in different areas of the world
- to share experiences of World Day of Prayer;
- to select themes and writers for the services
- to elect an Executive Committee, prepare a budget, etc.
- to consider ways by which the movement may grow.
Participation in South Africa is of the best in the world. We praise and thank the Lord for the faith, the need for prayer and the devoted interest in World Day of Prayer revealed by so many Christians in our country !
In reviewing the many years World Day of Prayer has been celebrated in Southern Africa, our hearts are lifted in gratitude. "To God be the Glory !
Are you part of this wave of prayer which sweeps the country every year, from north to south and from east to west ?
